If ever there was a moment in the history of our generation that defines uncertainty, it is now.

The pandemic, the civil rights movement, the economy and the unemployment rate, the future … everything is so unknown. (But honey, the future is ALWAYS unknown.)

Our habitual need for control is not currently on the charts. The result of this mindset can be a feeling of helplessness and impotence, which can feel crippling if you let it simmer for too long.

The truth is, my love, control is just an illusion. Control is a construct we invent to comfort ourselves in the face of uncertainty. It's nothing more than a distraction.

And here is the good news: there is something we can do to help us during moments of uncertainty when we desperately need something to turn to for hope. It's discipline, honey! Discipline offers us true liberation because it focuses our energy where it can make the biggest difference: inside.

One of the best ways to practice discipline is through meditation. This is where we can train the mind – by reversing the habitual tendencies that do not serve us and replacing them with healthy, healthy habits that move us forward on our way.

Cultivate patience through meditation

Habits like patience. The patience to live in this moment with all its unknowns and uncertainties. The patience to trust the now instead of guessing the future. The patience to trust the process instead of getting involved in the outcome. It is the difference between presence and absence.

Living for the future, focused on wanting answers to questions that will come in due course … that is life in the absence. Then we just go through the movements of life without paying attention, or worse, playing the role of a puppeteer, trying to manipulate people and experiences to force a desired outcome. No bueno, honey!

To make peace with "not-knowing," we need to focus our mind's attention on the intention of the heart and cultivate patience like precious flowers in a garden. We need to open ourselves to unconditional trust through meditation.

Meditation for uncertainty

Here is a practice from my course, 21 mantras and meditations, to regain trust in times of uncertainty.

Looked teachingMake yourself comfortable. Take a few deep, centered breaths and focus your attention inward. Bring your mindfulness for the outside world into your inner landscape.

Bring loving awareness within you and notice what you are going through when you ponder, "What does patience look like and how does it feel?" Allow yourself to work on this question. Direct the energy of your mind there. Examine the patience for the answer.

Whisper to yourself, "I'm curious about the unfinished business and unanswered questions in my life, but I don't ask for answers." Let yourself be anchored by this statement and sit down to it.

Making the decision to trust sets you free. You can live with the confidence that everything is going as it should and what is to come will unfold in due course. Your curiosity motivates you to proactively move forward, but allows you the freedom to live in the present and trust that the best-case scenario is on the way rather than focusing on the future.

What is it like not to ask for answers? How does it feel to be okay with what you just know?

Think about the things in your life for which you are currently asking for answers. What things are you waiting impatiently for to know the result? What things do you want to force?

Make a conscious choice to stay curious but open, with unwavering patience and an open heart. Bring that patience into your current scenario.

Whisper to yourself, “I trust that the answers will be given to me when I am ready to receive them and live accordingly.” Really, focus your mind's attention with the intention of your heart to inspire this unconditional trust and keep it quiet

Say, “I am at peace with where I am on my journey. I trust that in this moment I know everything I need to know. "

Take a deep breath. How do you feel?

Celebrate the wisdom you discovered today, my darling! Send love to yourself and everyone else. May all beings be happy and free, and may we all be happy and free.

The next time you feel that your impatience and need for control are getting crispy, repeat this practice using the patience that lies behind you.

And if you want to regain confidence in other parts of yourself and use discipline to turn your control deception into freedom, read the full course. It's utterly transformative, honey!

Not knowing! May you be at peace in your patience.
