Avocado Spread – Easy Recipe

If you are a regular on our blog, you must have seen several posts on avocado. We suggested some quick recipes with avocado. You can read these blog posts here … and here …

Just in case you're a smoothie lover, we've got an avocado smoothie recipe here too …

Today I thought of sharing a simple, easy avocado recipe that my lovely daughter-in-law made. In all honesty, I'm not a huge fan of this fruit for two reasons. On the one hand it tastes like butter and on the other hand it is a very expensive fruit that I can buy from me. I would never buy a single avocado for INR 400 or 450. LOL .. I look forward to enjoying my flavorful green coriander and mint spread that thrives in my vegetable garden with a crispy toast. As I said, my DIL prepared it and initially made me think: “Omg! What a waste of money turning INR 400 into a fancy piece of fruit. “But soon I was comforted and shocked to know that she can get avocados really cheap in Bangalore. Hmmm! Well I know she is a reasonable girl who knows the value of money. (Haha … so much of that MIL factor in me.)

Anyway, we know that avocado is the native fruit of Mexico and Central America. It is certainly a high calorie food with 100g of fruit that provides 160 calories. The good news, however, is that more than two-thirds of its calories come from monounsaturated oleic acid. When we consume monounsaturated fats instead of polyunsaturated fats and carbohydrates, we decrease our chances of weight gain and diabetes.

Health Benefits Of Avocado; Why do we have to eat it ..

There are other reasons to consume avocado …

  • Avocado is a very good source of omega-9 fats.
  • It helps in lowering cholesterol (LDL) levels and increasing good cholesterol (HDL) levels.
  • When nutritious vegetables are added to avocado, it will also help absorb the vitamins and nutrients found in the vegetables.
  • Avocado helps reduce hunger because it is high in calories and keeps us full longer.
  • Avocado is high in healthy fiber, protein, and low in carbohydrates.
  • It has anti-inflammatory benefits. So it helps in arthritis prevention.
  • Avocado helps regulate blood sugar because it is low in carbohydrates and sugar.
  • Avocado is also known to have cancer benefits.
  • It is considered to be heart healthy.

There are very few areas in India where avocados are grown. The beautiful slopes of Tamil Nadu, Coorg, Kerala and certain areas of Karnataka cultivate these extensively. Hmmm! Now we know why my DIL buys the delicious avocados so cheaply.

How to choose a good avocado

Experience shows that a ripe, ready-to-eat avocado has to be a bit soft, but not have any sinks or cracks. It has to be firm because it can later be matured at home. Store in a paper bag at room temperature and off you go. Remember, avocado should not be refrigerated until it has ripened well. Once ripe, it can be kept in the refrigerator for a maximum of a week.

That was all about the goodness of avocado … now let me share the recipe …

Avocado Spread – Easy Recipe

Ingredients:

  1. A nice ripe avocado
  2. Black pepper or white pepper powder (depending on how spicy you need it)
  3. Red chilli flakes add a bit of color.
  4. Mixed herbs / Italian spices (Domino pizza two bags are enough) 😛
  5. Garlic finely chopped to your taste. You can toast a few on a belt to add a bit of smoke.
  6. Finely chopped onion (optional as this can shorten the shelf life of the spread)
  7. Lemon juice or white vinegar just to add some flavor to the spread.

Method:

When your avocado is nice and soft, just mash everything well with a fork. If not that soft, use a blender. Here is the result….
