Garlic shrimp

This recipe is inspired by one of my favorite dishes from Spain, Gambas al Ajillo or Spanish garlic prawns. It usually floats in olive oil so I lightened it up a bit, but it's still just as tasty! ! It's light, garlic-like, and perfect with some crusty bread or served over rice! And best of all, it's assembled in just 10 minutes. If garlic isn't your thing, you can browse all of my shrimp recipes, like this shrimp ceviche, these shrimp taquitos or these delicious shrimp egg rolls.

Garlic prawns over rice

One of my favorite proteins in my freezer is shrimp! For convenience, you can buy it peeled and deveined so all you have to do is defrost it and then prepare your favorite dish. Shrimp take 3 to 4 minutes to cook, so it's perfect if you want a high-protein meal without wasting too much time. It's also a great source of lean protein.

This dish is a staple in my house because we are all shrimp lovers! It's also naturally gluten and dairy-free, so it will work for many dietary restrictions. Try it with Cilantro Lime Scallion Rice as a side dish.

How to make garlic shrimp

This simple shrimp recipe consists of just a few ingredients:

  • shrimp
  • garlic
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Mild Spanish peppers (the spice that makes chorizo red)
  • Crushed paprika flakes, for heat
  • Chopped parsley, for garnish

What kind of shrimp for this garlic shrimp recipe?

I prefer larger jumbo shrimp to garlic shrimp because they're meatier and tastier, but honestly, size doesn't matter. If you use smaller shrimp, cook them less time so they don't cook too long and become chewy.

Should you peel the prawns?

I always use peeled and deveined prawns because they're easier to eat than prawns that you have to peel yourself.

Variations:

  • If you want to do that Garlic Butter Shrimp, swap the olive oil for butter!
  • If you want to give it more South American flavors, swap the parsley for coriander and finally squeeze out some lime juice.
