How To Cope With Grief Amid 20th Anniversary Of 9/11
Around the 20th anniversary of September 11th, it is quite natural to feel a flood of emotions. I admit that even as a clinical psychologist, feelings for such an intense event can be overwhelming.
To cope with times like this, I turn to a strategy that combines perspectives from my yoga background and my psychological training in a system that I call C.A.R.E. call. – that stands for thinking, acting, thinking and lightness. It is designed to promote awareness of feelings and to help identify appropriate, healthy actions.
Intense, strong emotions often arise when we feel that there is injustice or some other trauma has occurred. Taking appropriate action often helps calm our emotions by creating a sense of certainty that we are not helpless and that our choices can make a difference to both ourselves and others. The care. The system is applicable to any situation where something shocking happened, but I'll use 9/11 as an example here.
