How to Navigate Astrology Transits In Our 30s and 40s

Like many humanities, astrology has grown in popularity enormously in recent years. Most people now know when Mercury is retrograde or what astrological sign the full moon is in. More than ever, people are also becoming more aware of important life “transits”, such as the Saturn return transit, which generally takes place between the ages of 28 and 31 years. Typically this is a time when the universe is bringing the teachings of Saturn into our lives at full power and pats us on the back to see if we are following our inner authority and not the path that social conditioning has given us.

These issues seem to have the majority of mainstream astrological airtime, but there are a few other life transits that can be helpful to look at.

Each of us has a unique natal chart that contains the specific placement of the planets at the time we were born and their energies. We call this the birth placements. Since the planets are always moving, a “transit” occurs when a moving planet encounters one of the birth positions of the planets when we were born.

Transits always happen, but some take longer and can have a greater impact on our lives, especially on outer planets like Neptune and Pluto.

In our early thirties, after the lessons of Saturn Return, we really feel that we have figured out some things and are on a solid path. However life, with its twists and turns, has many more lessons and surprises in store for us to aid us in our growing growth and awareness of our true selves.

Some of these changes and life lessons generally occur by the time we reach our late 30s and early 40s, although the age at which the transits take place can vary slightly for different generations.

The planet Pluto is about depth and transformation. It's a very slow planet. In our late 30s, it forms a square at right angles to the "birth position" of Pluto when we were born. Squaring aspects can be challenging. This placement can often mean many unexpected changes. Things that we felt were solid ground can be left out if necessary. It is a great time of dedication, trust and an opportunity to recognize all of the changes that are happening in your life path and make room for something else.

The transits affect everyone differently. But the general message for a Pluto transit is devotion and impermanence and a huge amount of confidence that everything will work out exactly as it should for you. We can never question what will happen in these transits, but they are certainly a time for us to really lean on our grounding practices, be it yoga and meditation or anything else that will keep us stable in times of change.

Directly after our Pluto-Platz we usually slide into a Neptune-Platz transit. Neptune is a home where the realms of bright fantasy live, but can also feel a bit dreamy and foggy, illusory and even delusional. This transit generally occurs in our early 40s and can be a time of deeper spiritual curiosity, insight, and growth. After Pluto Square levels the ground and the dreamy energy of the Neptunian Square comes in, one can stumble upon the thought, "I'm not sure where I'm really going or what's next."

This could have a classic midlife crisis feel to it, especially for those who may not have been preoccupied with their deeper selves or thought about the deeper meaning of life.

Transits are markers in our evolution that we all face. They are not to be feared, but are there to guide us, to shake out what does not serve us and often to embark on new paths of discovery that we could not imagine.

I often record the dates of birth of my Spiritual Mentoring Clients and I am fascinated that very often people visit me during one of these transits when they want to immerse themselves more in their deepest selves and really sharpen their inner compass in life. When a lost person comes to me for help, I share that they are exactly where they need to be, as they have heard the messages of their life and are curious to create a deeper connection with themselves. I think this is one of the greatest lessons in life that we all remember.
