How To Wear A Nude Lip This Season From A MUA

You see, while bold reds draw all the attention due to their precise application and care, I would argue that a bare lip requires even more attention to detail. That's why we asked celebrity makeup artist Alexandria Gilleo with her best tips – with as little effort as possible. Given how messy this holiday season is, I am absolutely looking for a look that is effortless without missing out on the glamor.

First things first, a nice pout always starts with lip care. Before applying makeup, do a gentle scrub. This removes excess dead skin cells and leaves skin smooth, gently plumped, softening the look of fine lines, and allowing a clean canvas for anything that follows. After your lip scrub, apply a layer of moisture with a quality lip balm. We recommend something that isn't too thick, shiny, or sticky as this will mess up pigments that will soon be applied. But you still want something that will keep you hydrated while you wear it. We love options that include butter, light vegetable oils (think moringa and jojoba), soft waxes, and maybe even hyaluronic acid for a subtle plump effect.

Once you've moisturized your skin, let the balm soak in before continuing with the other steps – next is the lip liner. “I always like to paint my clients' lips with a pencil that is about two shades darker than their skin color,” she says. When applying the liner, it is important to be light to the touch so as not to have sharp, harsh lines – but rather for a light shading effect around the mouth. "It's fun to even stroke their lips a little just to give them that nice, full pout."

Then it's time for the main attraction: the nude lipstick. Find one that suits your skin or is just a shade darker. Finding your perfect "act" can take some guessing and testing as each has a unique undertone. Ultimately, Gilleo says, "I always tell people when you decide on a lip color or a blush, you have to go to something you love." And that can mean your favorite nude shade is slightly mauve while someone else opts for something with plum undertones. All are acceptable options.

Well, earlier nudes were typically of the dull sort. But Gilleo says she loves the creamy sticks she sees this time. "I see so many beautiful off-white nude colors that have really moisturizing formulas and I love them," she says. “Personally, I've got over super matte lipsticks. Some might disagree, but I find them too dry. ”For what it's worth, my personal tastes are always strong in Camp Cream Lipstick – there's something so delicious about a silky finish. But anything from a soft semi-matte to a gentle sheen will work for this look.

After all, a bare lip should always be paired with another notable moment, even if it's as simple as a full eyebrow and a sweep of mascara. But Gilleo's go-tos are a power eye (check out our favorite eyeliner looks for inspiration) or a refreshing touch of blush. The latter feels like a fun, lively update on the trend.

"I feel like if you're doing a bare lip, you can't go wrong with a little glow or blush – basically you want some kind of blush in your cheeks that feels bright and plump," she says, also notes loves an off-white blush for this look.
