Instant Coffee Is Healthy Or Not?
Hello All!!!!
Do you prefer filter coffee or instant coffee?? The latter is quite common all around the world. Around 50% of the population goes in for the instant version. This is mainly because it is fast easy and cheap when compared to filter coffee.
We all know that there are several benefits of regular coffee but do the benefits apply to coffee as well? Well, let us have a look and find out whether Instant Coffee Is Healthy Or Not!
What exactly is instant coffee?
Instant coffee is one kind of coffee that is made from the extract of dried coffee. Ground coffee beans are brewed to make the extract. The procedure is similar to regular coffee brewing. The difference is just that it is more concentrated. After it is brewed, the water is removed from the extract in order to make powder or dry fragments. Both dissolve in water.
Two ways are used to make instant coffee:
- Spray drying
- Freeze drying
Both the above methods preserve the aroma, flavour and quality of the coffee.
Instant coffee, as its name suggests is prepared by adding a teaspoon of the coffee powder or granules to a cup of hot water. You can adjust the coffee’s strength by varying the amount of coffee powder into your cup.
Instant coffee has nutrients and antioxidants
In the modern diet, coffee is regarded as the biggest source of antioxidants. The high antioxidant content offers a lot of health benefits. Just like regular coffee, instant coffee also has several powerful antioxidants.
One study says that instant coffee has more of certain antioxidants when compared to other kinds of coffee because of the way it is processed.
The caffeine content in instant coffee is lesser
Coffee is the biggest source of caffeine. However, when compared to regular coffee, caffeine in instant coffee is slightly less. A single cup of instant coffee has 30 to 90 mg of caffeine whereas a cup of regular coffee has between 70 and 140 mg per cup.
Instant coffee seems to be a better choice for people who want to reduce their caffeine intake. You also get instant decaf coffee that has even lesser amount of caffeine. Too much of caffeine is bad for health as it can cause anxiety, cause fast heart-beat, affect sleep, make you restless and upset your stomach.
Instant coffee has higher acrylamide content
When coffee beans are roasted, acrylamide is formed. The potentially harmful chemical is found in lots of foods, personal care products, and household items.
Instant coffee is said to contain two times the amount of acrylamide present in fresh and roasted coffee.
Overexposure to acrylamide has a lot of health risks. But also remember that the amount of acrylamide in coffee is lower than doses that are considered harmful. Thus, drinking instant coffee should not be a health concern.
Drinking instant coffee has the same health benefits as that of regular coffee
Just like regular coffee, instant coffee enhances brain function, boosts metabolism, reduces risk of diabetes, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. It also promotes liver health, mental health and promotes longevity.
The bottom line
Instant coffee is quick and easy to make as you don’t need a coffee maker. It is cheaper and has a longer shelf-life. It is handy, especially when you are traveling or are on the go. The caffeine content in it is low and the acrylamide content is high but the antioxidant content is the same as that of regular coffee. So, it can be said that instant coffee is healthy!
