The pandemic has turned normality upside down for many people, including Pip Elysium. She lost her yoga studio, her home in central London, and then suffered an unexpected breakup and the death of a dear friend. The mounting grief felt heavy, and Pip searched for an escape route and looked across the ocean to Bali.
Upon arrival in Bali, Pip turned to movement and dance to ease her grief. Dance is not just a methodical and repetitive exercise, but an expression of the soul – and a social activity – all of which aid the healing process. As a trained ballet dancer, one might have assumed that Pip would have an easy time taking dance lessons, but in fact she hadn't danced in years. Being in a dance class with a number of other girls and facing yourself in the mirror was a challenging experience. Slowly she found her way and was able to use nourishing movements to take her first steps towards healing. It was'nt easy. Then she found partner dance.
Pip met Bryndon Tarafa at a partner dance class. They started dancing bachata and together they were able to set up a dance partnership. Once or twice a week they met for rehearsals, practiced elevators and choreographies and found their expression through movement. They were both carried by the dance itself – a life-affirming, dynamic force.
By sharing her story of how she finds healing through movement, Pip wants to encourage you to try something new. With movement as a vehicle, you can face your fears, fuel your growth, and rely on the full expression of what life has to offer. Perhaps you will find the gift of movement and dancing that Pip almost lost.
