How to Find Your Zen when PMS Strikes
It's been a crazy year during the pandemic, filled with problems both small and enormous.
We had to deal with a global pandemic, our schools, work environments and health were up in the air year round.
Life right now is stressful enough, but do we also have to deal with PMS?
What exactly is PMS?
PMS occurs a week or two before the start of the period when women experience different side effects due to the hormonal changes taking place in their bodies.
Symptoms can start about a week or two before the bleeding and stop when your period starts.
There are a number of different symptoms that can be physical and emotional, including mood swings, irritability, anxiety, stress, and gloom.
Other physical symptoms include breast tenderness, gas, acne, and pain. Most symptoms will return over time and all women will have different symptoms.
Some women may have severe emotional stress or anxiety or mood swings during this time of the month; others may only have sugar cravings. When it interferes with your daily life it is considered premenstrual syndrome.
PMS can also change as you get older. Symptoms may shift as your body ages.
One way to look at this is to ask once a month whether these developments are causing problems with work or your family, and whether they affect you in the week before your period. Then it's PMS.
