There is a difference between the definition of happiness and the definition of joy. It is valuable to be aware of because when it gets difficultLogic might want you to be desperate, or all sad, or worse by default. You may think you have to choose between hardship and joy, or support and separation, or light and dark.

Consciousness is not an either-or equation. It's about bothness.

The ability to expand into botness – awareness of your joy in all circumstances – is so much of what it means to evolve.

"I like to live. I was sometimes wild, desperate, acutely miserable, plagued by grief, but through all of that I still know for sure that just being alive is a great thing." – AGATHA CHRISTIE

Happiness is like bubbles rising – delightful and inevitably fleeting. Oxygen is joy – always present.

Happiness always comes through. It can take your full attention for the ten seconds it takes to swallow an incredible sip of coffee. Or it can flow through your being for weeks. However, happiness cannot long take up the same space as sadness, anger or the range of so-called "negative" emotions. That's why it's ephemeral.

Joy is the fiber of your soul. It's the stuff of your essence. And since you, your soul, can never be destroyed (yes, that would make you eternal and omnipresent), your access to joy never disappears. Because joy is so fundamental to your true being, any other state or emotion can rest on joy and absorb anything.

This means that it is possible to grieve with all your heart and still feel your joy. You can feel anger and be aware of the joy that is waiting patiently for you to returnand comfort yourself deeply with it.

"You can be fired, dumped, dumped and pulled through the eye of a needle and still feel held by the container of joy – the truth of your existence."

When you get to this awareness (you will likely have to go through the wringer to get there) your logical mind will get confused.

"I'm going through hell. This is the worst thing that has ever happened to me. What is this powerful warmth that I feel within? I have to lose it. I have to be in denial. I should return to misery."

Stick to misery. Stay with the powerful warmth that comes from within.

"I am in pain because of this loss. Can this painful gratitude be real at my core? Am I betraying my memories? Am I denying my pain?"

Not at all. They are expanding.

When you see joy alongside agony, you have a keen vision of a warrior of soul.

It never failed to go through the most heartbreaking passages of my life –Treason, financial hardship, divorce, dreams shattered – the pain brought me to the bottom of my being, and what was there to be found?

The simple joy of being in life. So cosmically fundamental that it's mind-blowing: the joy of being here, connected, enlivened, breathing, blessed, resilient, broken, open, having what was, what is left, what is to come. The joy of just being part of reality.

Happiness. I love it when it comes to it.

Joy. It is love that definitely lasts.

One Love,
