Why Brown Rice Is Better Than White Rice

This is yet another addition to my findings from my dietitian. She asked me to have brown rice for dinner.
Now I don't really like brown rice. We North Indians like basmati rice so much that we don't want to know if there is anything else! N Rajma Chawal, yummy! Are you drooling? If so, a Hi Fi 🙂!

White rice tastes good, looks even better! Brown rice doesn't taste as good as white rice! But it undoubtedly wins when it comes to nutrition.

Both white rice and brown rice go through some processes that create this nutritional difference. Brown rice is refined, which removes the husk from the rice kernel. The nutrition is preserved. White rice, on the other hand, is ground and polished, absorbing the essential nutrients.

Can you imagine how many nutrients are lost in converting brown rice to white rice?

  • 90% vitamin B6
  • 67% vitamin B3
  • 60% iron
  • 50% phosphorus

I am listing the reasons why you should have brown rice in your meals –

1. Brown rice is good for the heart and prevents cancer. It is high in selenium which helps in reducing the development of cancer, inflammatory diseases, heart disease and arthritis.

2. It helps reduce weight and improve metabolism thanks to the immense fiber that brown rice contains. We know fiber will keep you full for a long time.

3. One cup of brown rice provides 80% of the body's daily manganese needs. Manganese helps build good cholesterol in the body.

4. Brown rice is whole grain, nature at its best! For obvious reasons, organic brown rice is best to eat! Since organic foods are hard to come by, even substituting regular brown rice for white rice will improve your health!

5. Brown rice contains naturally occurring oils

The heart healthy oils are found in brown rice, which lowers bad cholesterol.

6. Brown rice causes weight loss

No matter how much you eat, you eat fiber;].

7. Brown rice is an antioxidant like green tea

8. Brown rice is a slow release sugar

Brown rice can help keep blood sugar stable because, unlike white rice, it slowly releases sugar. This means that diabetics can have brown rice too.
